Father Andrew's Let's Talk "Heart to Heart"
Let's Talk: "Heart to Heart"

Around two months ago I visited with Msgr. Patrick Nolan. I had known that he had been diagnoses with cancer and doctors gave him only a few more months to live. I would like to be able to make him stronger by reassuring him that we remember him in our daily prayers. I would like to support him with the spiritual strength of the Church. However, I found him very peaceful and serene with a good sense of humor , helping visitors like me to sustain a great spiritual attitude through the joy of faith and commitment of love. Surprising, Monsignor has been able to joke regarding his illness. He told me that people are so nice bringing him chicken soup (a lot of bowls). "But I am not sick. I'm the healthiest in my life. I have only a terminated illness. That's all". He is happy to embrace another day as a new opportunity of life.

On a rare moment that we were alone, he asked me if I would take over the "Healing Mass," to continue the celebration once a month on Sunday with this unique approach for all our sick. The "Healing Mass " was started by Msgr. Patrick Nolan in 1992 at St. Philomene where Monsignor was a pastor. From this time on, most of us have been familiar with the "Healing Mass" in our neighboring parish. Msgr. Nolan was concerned about re-location of this Mass to our parish. My response was warm and welcoming. I asked Bishop William Weigand for his opinion and eventually his permission to make this change. Our Parish Council and Liturgy Council were also asked for their advice. Two weeks ago Bishop Weigand gave his blessing to our parish to hold the "Healing Mass," to show, I am quoting, "the pastoral care of those who feel the need of this special _expression of the healing powers of our Blessed Lord". Information about the relocation of this Mass was sent to neighboring parishes, to the Catholic Herald and the Catholic Radio.

Msgr. Nolan and all of us hope that he can attend the first "Healing Mass" in our parish on Nov. 19 at 1pm. Let's pray for Msgr. Nolan and for our new ministry in the parish helping others in their need.

God Bless, Fr. Andrew

City of God….

This week I am away on the remainder of my vacation, continuing the celebration of my birthday with my circle of friends. Across the miles as I celebrate, I am recalling the memories of 50 years of life and love. For 25 years now I have called Kilkenny, Ireland my second home. Sacramento is my first and native home, "South Sacramento" specifically. As a priest of the Sacramento Diocese these 20 counties of Northern California can and do, become my home. My ministry attests to that , having served to date in Sacramento, Placer, Yolo, Siskiyou and Butte counties since my ordination 20 years ago. For the past five months I have been truly blessed to call Presentation Parish my home. Please God, the good work we are doing here together will continue for a long time to come, as everyday I am discovering that what priests and people have always told me about this parish is true: it is a community with a collegial and collaborative spirit. Your response thus far to my presence here has been affirming. The Mystagogia Experience was superb, and I am confident the Advent and Lenten series' of adult faith formation will be another wonderful gathering of the faithful and fervent members of our parish. Here's to being back with you and going forward together on the paths of, "Faith, Fellowship, Collegiality, and Collaboration", that truly make us God's people. God Love You…..Fr. Troy
